Industrial TurnAround Corporation began its journey in 1988 in Hopewell, Virginia when Sidney
Harrison recognized the need for a local engineering company that understood the industrial consumer. Sidney’s vision in founding the company was to “provide quality design and build services to the industrial plant engineering and maintenance market while developing a partnership with plant engineering and maintenance organizations and acting as an extension of those organizations”. His vision coincided with the national trend toward downsizing manufacturing engineering and design staff. He identified and hired many capable employees, providing them a venue from which to showcase their skills and bring value to their new customers.
ITAC was born from humble beginnings in a rented office on 922 East Randolph Road. Ray Harrison of Harrison Mechanical and Sidney’s brother, rented this first office space to ITAC and made available a $5,000 operating loan to help ITAC meet its first few week’s obligations. As ITAC’s business and staff grew over time, Sidney leased trailers and installed them behind the small ITAC construction shop. Soon afterwards, a two-story office building was added to accommodate the company’s growth, and in 1995 Sidney moved the company into a multi-story building a few miles away on 6th Street in Hopewell. Steady growth over the next several years necessitated another move to a 35,000 square foot office facility in Chester, Virginia.
Throughout the early ITAC years, several of our neighbors became integral components of our client base – Stone Container, Goldschmidt Chemical, Hercules, Firestone, and AlliedSignal. Within five years the company grew to 30 employees and eclipsed $12MM in sales. This rapid growth contributed to ITAC’s achieving the top honor of Richmond Metropolitan's Rising 25 for the first time in 1993.
ITAC’s business continued growing throughout the 1990s, bringing larger and more complex engineering and construction projects, and necessitating the addition of many new and talented ITAC employees. Through that era ITAC built strong and lasting relationships with several clients that continue to be key customers 15 years later. ITAC’s family of small companies and related business units worked together through those early years to solve project challenges and to grow bonds throughout the region that have helped make ITAC the strong and cohesive organization we are today.
In the year 2000 ITAC continued the expansion of facilities and offerings to meet growing market demands. In 2004, the self-perform construction company Electrical Mechanical Services, Inc. (EMSI) was acquired, further expanding ITAC’s capabilities. That same year we opened a construction services office in Chesapeake, Virginia. Since then ITAC has further diversified to penetrate the commercial and light industrial markets. In June 2009, with in 350+ employees, ITAC moved one block down the road to our new 60,000 square foot office space and headquarters. We built-in excess room and work capacity and we plan to stay here in our new
and beautiful facility for years to come.
As an engineering and construction company, ITAC’s top priority is personnel and project safety. Our full-time corporate safety director sets the pace by maintaining a safety-oriented culture at the front-and-center of our daily work processes. In concert with safety, we demand of ourselves product and service quality, customer satisfaction, and competitive and efficient project execution. Our projects are engineering-led and construction-driven, ensuring quality in our design while minimizing the costs of engineering and maximizing the depth of our construction input. ITAC’s capacity for project scope and size includes the small, single discipline project all the way to managing multi-million dollar turn-key design/build projects. Our largest design-build project to-date is valued at $100MM.
Today, we employ over 150 engineers, designers, and project and construction managers in our engineering, on-site, and design/build staff. We also have up to 150 self-perform construction personnel. We have built one of the strongest vertically integrated design/build firms in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region, focusing on the small to mid-sized project market for the industrial and manufacturing markets.
ITAC has come a long way from that rented office space in Hopewell, Virginia, yet our journey has just begun. We work hard every day to be a major player in the Mid-Atlantic engineering and construction industries. Great companies typically originate from humble beginnings, strong values, sound work ethic, solid principles, and a vision to lead. ITAC’s history is its future and we look forward to all the continued success it has to offer.
